Waterproof vs Water-Resistant

Water damage is one of the most common problems experienced by many iPad users. So getting protection for a tablet or phone makes sense. But, what is the best protection for you? What is the difference between  water-resistant and waterproof? Water-resistant is that it’s able to resist the penetration of water to a certain degree, but not entirely. Waterproof technically means that it’s impermeable to water, no matter how much time it spends in water. Check out the following info to help you decide on the best way to water protect your gear this wet winter season.

WHAT IS WATER-RESISTANT?

Waterproof technically means that it’s impermeable to water, no matter how much time it spends in water. The product should be totally sealed or protected from the effects of water. Good old H2O won’t penetrate or affect the product at all. This is a difficult task to maintain forever. However, can be achieved for extended periods of time with the right case and air tight seals.  Check out this iPad water test video showing how water damage effects the device.

Water-resistant refers to an item’s ability to resist the penetration of water to some degree. This means that water won’t be able to get inside the item easily, but there is still a chance that water will get through at some point. Water-resistant offers only a moderate level of water protection. Most water-resistant cases are a little more lightweight than a waterproof design.

The IP marking for International Protection or Ingress Protection is followed by two numbers.

The first number designates its ingress protection against solids, such as dust with numbers ranging from 0 to 6 (the higher the number, the better the protection).

When you see a 6 for the first number, then the product is dust-tight, which means it’s completely protected against contact with dust. Having this rating can be important for manufacturing, mobile workers or any user that wants to use their device in dusty environments.

The second number refers to the ingress protection against liquids, with numbers that can range from 0-9 (again, higher is better).

Well, to finally answer the question is iPad waterproof or water-resistant? No. To make your iPad or iPhone waterproof you will need a case with these kinds of features.

As more users include such devices in their daily workflow, accidents like dropping your device while in the field and while on manufacturing lines are stories commonly reported by business tablet users. There are also a growing number of people using tablet and phone devices in underwater or extreme weather situation on a regular basis for work, pleasure and business.

Most cases that protect your tablet from water also offer some level of protection against dust and impact as well. Here is a video demonstrating how to test a waterproof case to test if it is water tight.
